Skynet member killed in car crash

Martin Mellody

It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce the untimely death of an early Skynet user, Martin Mellody (mellodym), aged 34.

Martin was killed last night in a car crash, driving from Dublin to Limerick.

He studied Computer Engineering in UL, and did a Masters by Research & Thesis for Dr. John Nelson. After college, he worked for a number of semiconductor related companies as an employee and contractor, and more recently co-founded high-profile Irish tech startup, Movidia.com

Martin was one of the most brilliant and intelligent engineers I know. He had an amazing capacity to tackle any problem (technical or otherwise) irrespective of complexity. He was also a mate, and a good chap to have a chat over a few pints with.

We always had fun philosophical debates on the merits of FLOSS vs Microsoft - despite using Linux regularly, Martin was a die-hard Windows devotee - e.g. http://www.linux.ie/old-list/13093.html

His home page, http://www.skynet.ie/~mellodym had one of the earlist “under construction” tags I remember seeing on the web. I joked with him on occasion that it was real timewarp seeing - like the early days of the web back in the mid 90s. I guess now it will forever remain under construction.

I am very saddened by the news, and my sincerest sympathies go to his family.

A memorial site has been set up on skynet at http://memorial.skynet.ie where people can pay their respects.

For details of funeral arrangements, please email sysadm@skynet.ie.
